Copacabana Palace
The luxurious Copacabana Palace hotel is a renowned Rio de Janeiro landmark
It is not our intention to promote the Copacabana Palace as a place to stay in Rio, but rather as one of the most significant and beautiful hotels in the city that has indeed become synonymous with Rio de Janeiro itself.
This beautiful Art Deco hotel designed by French architect Joseph Gire first opened its doors just over 80 years ago in 1923. Located right across from the mid way point of Copacabana beach, this luxury hotel has become the place to stay in Rio, especially for the rich and famous.
Within ten years of opening, the hotel was featured in the 1933 Hollywood film Flying down to Rio.
In the 1970s the hotel started to get run down due to lack of proper maintenance and upkeep. With that happening, a number of newer modern hotels took the spotlight as the number one place to stay in Rio. This gradual degradation almost led to the demolition of Copacabana Palace with plans being drawn up to do just that in 1985. Fortunately that never came to pass and this landmark building was purchased by the Orient Express group and gradually restored to its former glory.
Once again the Copacabana Palace is one of the preferred destinations of the rich and famous, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled when you are in the area, as you never know who you might see.
You are certain to see this luxury hotel and landmark when you are visiting Copacabana Beach, but why not take some time to go inside and treat yourself to a little bit of luxury exploring some of the shops or enjoying some fine dining in one of the restaurants.
