All big cities have a street that is the commercial vein of the city. The street where big named stores take up residence, the street that shop-o-holics come to, in their droves looking for the garment that will make them stand out amongst the rest. To those who live close to Downtown Montreal, Quebec, Rue Saint Catherine is that street. The construction of the Rue was started in 1801 and it is located between Notre-Dame street and Claremont Avenue and crosses the central district.

Rue Saint Catherine literally offers you a shopping experience which stretches for kilometres, 11.5km to be exact. That is a lot of shopping. The Rue is busy as it is usually packed with tourists and locals all day. Not only will you be able to shop along the Rue but you will also find exits off the main road to go down into the underground shopping mall. The underground shopping mall is perfect to use when the weather is colder. Not only will you find some of the worlds most famous department stores but you will there are also multitudes of restaurants, coffee shops and bistro's. There is not a thing you will not be able to find on Rue Saint Catherine or close by.

You can browse the local Apple store or a branch of Indigo Books and Music. For those who prefer clothing there are Puma, Guess and Adidas stores. There is definitely something to suit every taste and entertain an entire family for days on end on the Rue Saint Catherine. Just be sure to bring plenty of cash to make sure that you are not disappointed and can get whatever it is that catches your eye.

Being the central vein of the city you will also find that it is very easy to get from Rue Saint Catherine to other sites of interest in the city, such as Place de Arts. When visiting Rue Saint Catherine be prepared for a lot of walking so put on your walking shoes.

Metro Line 1 (Green) runs parallel to a long stretch of Rue St-Catherine from Atwater Station in the west to Papineau in the east. Some of these stations exit right onto Rue St-Catherine while others have exits located just north of the street.
