Royal Alexandra Theatre

Opened in 1907, the Royal Alexandra Theatre is the oldest theatre in North America to operate continuously without converting to any other use.
Featuring some incredible architecture for it's time this theatre was constructed with a steel framework to permit cantilevered balconies and no pillars in order to provide an unobstructed view. The structure is finished with the finest of materials including imported marble, cherry and walnut carved by hand, fine velvet and silk, lead crystal chandeliers and ornate plaster. A large ice pit below the orchestra provided an early form of air conditioning to theatre goers.
In 1963 the theatre was closed for updating systems and restoration to it's original splendour and in 1987 the Royal Alexandra was declared a National Historic Monument.
The theatre which has hosted over 3000 productions since opening continues to be a popular venue for Toronto plays and musicals with seating for up to 1500 patrons.
