Sydney Buses

A guide to travelling around Sydney on the Buses

The majority of attractions featured in our site our within a short walk of a CityRail, or Monorail Station. In some cases however, the walking distance can be shortened significantly by hopping on a Sydney Bus. There are also a few attractions that we feature that are best reached by means of travelling by bus.

An excellent option for tourists is the #555 Free CDB Shuttle Bus. This free service operates in both directions between Circular Quay in the North and Central Station to the south - primarily along George Street and Elizabeth Street. The buses used on this route are green in colour, so they are easy to spot. Make sure you are at one of their designated stops.

Take a look at the map below you will see that this bus will get you close to a large number of Sydney attractions all for free. Using this in conjunction with a Monorail Day Pass is really all you need get to all of the attractions that are in central city. The only drawback is that the free shuttle bus only operates from 9:30am to 3:30pm on weekdays except on Thursdays the hours are extended until 9pm and on weekends until 6:30pm.

In addition to the free CDB bus, Sydney has a very extensive bus network and the service on most routes is very frequent. Buses actually get around Sydney very efficiently. You will notice that in many parts of the city there are lanes that are dedicated to the buses which helps them avoid a lot of the traffic congestion.

You can enjoy unlimited rides on Sydney Buses along with trains, ferries and light rail with the MyMulti Pass. For a guide to public transport fares in Sydney see our page on Fares.

It should be noted that most of the bus stops in Central Sydney are PrePay stops meaning you have to purchase a fare prior to boarding the bus. This will not be a problem for you if you have a MyMulti Pass and of course does not apply to the #555 Free CDB Bus. For information on where to pre purchase your bus tickets see our page on fares.

You can find more information and a trip planner for Sydney Buses from the official website: NSW Sydney Buses

You will also find information on what bus to catch and where in the "Getting There" section of any attractions we feature that require transportation by bus.
