Brooklyn

Just over the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn beckons visitors to come and explore its many interesting neighbourhoods, parks museums and galleries

For many visitors to New York, New York equals Manhattan, but across the bridge lies a whole other borough worth exploring because more than a tree grows in Brooklyn. Once a large city in its own right before amalgamating with New York in the late 1800s, Brooklyn's tree-line cobblestone streets, historic brownstones and culturally diverse neighbourhoods are treasures waiting to be discovered.

DUMBO, short for "Down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass", has emerged as one of New York's premier art district and home to the DUMBO Arts Center and a number of galleries and performance spaces. Nearby, Brooklyn Bridge Park hosts a summer movie series and other programs with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop. Brooklyn's best asset can be enjoyed at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade with its uninterrupted views of the harbour and the Statue of Liberty.

Williamsburg is the poster child of Brooklyn counterculture with scores of hipster boutiques, thrift stores, bars and restaurants juxtaposed with large Orthodox Jewish community and Polish communities. The Brooklyn Brewery offers tours of its brewery or enjoy the nightlife at Barcade, a bar and video game paradise or one of Williamsburg many other watering holes.

Beaches in Brooklyn at Coney Island, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach offer a welcome escape from hazy summer days in the City. Currently undergoing an extensive revitalisation, the Coney Island Boardwalk amusement parks are home to some of the best thrill rides in the country. From Prospect Park to Jamaica Bay, Brooklyn's great outdoors offer something for everyone with hiking trails, sporting facilities, zoo and botanical garden.
