TourbyTransit.com is a free to use travel website offering information about attractions, restaurants, and hotels in major cities around the world that are convenient to access by public transit. We endeavour to provide interesting and accurate information, photos and videos about each attraction along with directions for getting to them by public transit. We also provide an overview and helpful advice on using the public transit system in each city we cover. We hope you will find the content helpful and useful for planning your vacation.
The concept for TourbyTransit.com came about during my many years as a transit operator in the city of Vancouver BC. During the busy tourist season I was bombarded with questions by, often confused, tourists struggling to get around the city on public transit. Many tourists find public transit somewhat intimidating, especially when using it is not part of their regular routine. From this, I could see a need for a travel website with a focus on getting around popular destinations using public transportation. The official transit websites, while helpful and authoritative, can also be confusing and result in information overload - especially for individuals who have little or no previous experience using public transit. Their automated trip planners, while helpful, sometimes produce confusing or complex routings with numerous transfers. We try to give you the simplest option even if it may take a few minutes longer, as extra transfers only make your trip more complex and there are more chances of missing a connection or simply getting lost. Our goal is to provide you with a comprehensive travel guide for each city we cover which includes an easy to read overview of the public transit system covering what you need to know as a tourist.
In addition to the above, I also watched the many tour buses driving around with loads of tourists and realized that they where paying a premium price compared to a day pass on public transit in order to see the city. While we have nothing against tour services (for the most part they provide a great service), we want to offer our readers a less costly and more flexible alternative to package tours. Public transit systems cover a much larger area than most of the hop on - hop off tour buses.
Drawing from my experience as a transit operator as well as my experience touring other major cities using public transit, I created TourbyTransit.com beginning with Vancouver.
